Yeah, I know my title's pretty cliche. You can put any year there and say "the year that was" so I put in another adjective. Hehe.
Let's start the backtrack with a depressing note. :D
2008 is the year of the global economic crisis. The US meltdown started with the downfall of Lehman Brothers. We not only have to worry about global warming but we also have to pick up the pieces from the financial crisis we're in. Bummer.
All eyes are set on Obama's presidency as salvation but I think we all need to put our effort in as well. I hate it when I hear people complain about the government, as if they don't have a say on how to run their lives. Yes, the government has the powers that be but you gave them that.
Meanwhile, 2008 has been bitter to China. Before the onslaught of the melamine craze, officials in the Philippines have also cautioned local consumers of toys made in China because of its lead content. Moreover after the melamine issue, some canned goods from China were found to be containing cadmium, a cancer-causing metal. And we haven't yet noted the great earthquake that shook China that killed 5,000 people and injured 10,000 more.
Well, at least the Beijing Olympics was successful, ei? :)
Aside from the global crisis, the Philippines kept to its usual trend in 2008. Meaning disasters, terrorism, corruption, and boxing. The unfortunate mishap of the MV Princess among other tragedies plus typhoon casualties. The kidnapping of Ces Drilon and her media team. The nth impeachment case against PGMA and other senate hearings to date. And the recent victory of Pacquiao to de la Hoya, even proclaimed Boxer of the Year.
Yes, the Philippines is a happy country despite anything depressing that has happened, is happening, and will happen. We endure to the better and worse. Having this quality has its advantages and disadvantages, of course.
So... Happy New Year, anyone? :D

Oktoberfest 120 in Pictures: Part III
As I told earlier, only my girl friends and I were able to enter the grounds to much of my horror. ^^ It really is no fun if you're still waiting for your other companions to get inside and you don't know if they'll be able to enter or you'll soon get out instead.
This is the rally-like crowd at the back entrance, where women were supposed to be carried over. (Ugh again for the memory.) This is also the throng of people where our male friends might be in. (Who can see through these people?) Ironic for the "Samahang Walang Katulad" slogan. Wahaha.
Here are some of the 12 guards who have a non-obvious mission, perhaps even to themselves. (I'm actually being nice here. XD) I don't know if the man at the right is the bouncer. :P At the back of the stall there was supposed to be the "exit." Another watda moment.
A close-up of the "exit" with some people thinking they were the ones being photographed. Haha. Pity the innocent plants trampled upon. Call 911!
Time's up again. Till next sarcastic episode. Hahaha.

The Ninth 9/11
Seven years ago, when I came home for lunch after classes, I looked at the calendar and checked the date: September 11. Ninang's (Filipino term for godmother) second death anniversary. As I was mulling over Ninang's death, Mama told me to watch the news because of a devastating event in the US.A video clip showed two huge towers exploding and crumbling down. They replayed the clip and I saw a jet plunging into the towers, causing the explosion. I thought it was a very good exhibition. Yet afterwards I came to know that it was a terrorist attack. It was horrific seeing those falling debris, thinking there are people that might be falling as well. It was truly an agonizing tragedy for the whole world.
The world shared my pain. And I to the world.

With Oktoberfest as a night-out, I was also able to thoroughly test my cam on night shots. Geez, I have to fix my shaky hands so as not to add up on the blur and noise. Getting back to Oktoberfest...
Well, after more or less 30 minutes of waiting on humid atmosphere (or sweaty crowd, ugh), my SMC friends were able to squeeze our way inside the venue. Flashing of IDs weren't enough, tickets weren't enough. A little angst was needed. >.<>

Honestly this was my first Oktoberfest and I'm really disappointed with how San Miguel's men, whoever's the culprit I won't know, handled the crowd that night.
Yes, we were late. Past 9pm when we arrived at San Miguel Ave because of waiting on each other. I and two of my companions that night literally came from work here in Pampanga and travelled all the way to Metro Manila for the event. The streets were crowded with people and vehicles. It looked like a rally.
We were situated at the back of the venue so I wasn't able to get a great view of the fireworks, which started at 9pm. *sad*
It was very difficult getting inside. Even with us having tickets. And even with two of my friends who are already employees in San Miguel.
Were we able to get inside? And if not, what to do? Going from Pampanga to Manila is no joke, huh. >.<

September 5, 2008 will never be the same again, as the the popular American alternative rock band - Third Eye Blind will be having a big concert along with the Filipino rock band inline with the kick off of the San Miguel Beer Oktoberfest Siento Bente, it means that it will be 120 days or 4 months celebration of the annual San Miguel Beer Oktoberfest. It is the biggest and grandest and long running fiesta of friends and barkada here in the Philippines, and plus the annual fiesta is now recognized by the Department of Tourism, and it is now official.
The venue of the kick off event will be in the street of San Miguel Avenue in Ortigas, big 4 stages wll be set up, and on each stage will have a different showcase of style of music, so that everyone can enjoy any kind of music styles from pop, rock, reggae, acoustic and alternative music. It will be the biggest kick off event and I know all of you are excited on this.
The line up of bands on September 5 is composed of over 40 bands, including Third Eye Blind and also our finest Filipino rock bands like Rivermaya, The Dawn, Afterimage, Nyoy Volante, Paolo Santos, Jimmy Bondoc, Nina, Rico Blanco, and many more, these bands will be there to perform for everyone and also in celebration of the big feast.

100 Blessings
It's my 100th post here in NER! Woohoo! *fireworks and trumpets please* ^^
In line with my blessed 100th, it rained all of a sudden this afternoon. So I totally enjoyed my strawberry jam-filled crackers and warm milk tea. Yum yum ^^
For all the other 99 posts, this blog has gone through a lot of my rants, idiosyncrasies and meditations. And of course, a different layout and theme once in a while. (Once in a while daw oh :P)
Looking back at all those previous 99, I came up with my favorite 7 posts. It's nice that my favorites came out with my favorite number. (If you notice, my name has 7 letters also in it: N-E-R-I-S-S-A.) So here's my fave 7, in no particular order:
1. Yakult Litro. May kwentong Yakult ka rin ba? For me this was the most fun post I've ever made in this blog. It was real fun because me and my officemates were laughing while reminiscing our Yakult moments. It was funny and endearing at the same time. Yakult is an integral part of my childhood, I tell you. Haha. XD
2. The Dash by Linda Ellis. Among all the inspiring stories I shared, The Dash sticks out most because of the simplicity and profoundness of the poem. I wish I can do masterpieces like this kind.
3. Silang Lihim (Them Secrets). I haven't done any poem recently and this is by far my latest reflective poem on humanity for which I'm kinda proud of.
4. City of Sorrow. Since we came upon my former passion of poetry, this poem is also one of my latest works that delved into bleak sadness. I liked how it came about because this is a new style compared to my other poems.
5. Loneliness is a Friend. Perhaps I was really sulking in sorrow at this point of time, since both City of Sorrow and this reflection (my most emo post ever) were posted at the same month. Don't worry, I'm not depressed anymore. :)
6. When I Die. This poem is not as morbid as you may think. If you've read it, it's actually contrary to #4 and #5 because it sees death in a more optimistic perspective. I've done this poem when I was in college and only posted it in line with the coming All Saints last year. I'm touched that a lot of people appreciated its meaning.
7. Pabaon. This is just a short post that wasn't meant to be blogged. I was chatting with Chen then when she left ASC and I gave this piece of advice, which I thought was really good. Thus I posted it so I won't forget my little gem of truth. The post is in Filipino and in my haste, I haven't injected the translation so I'll put it here.
I still have some things to write but it seems that my post is already long. Reflecting on my whole journey in this blog, it seems that I haven't fully given you a worthwhile stay here. So my resolution will be to give more sensible posts. Or if not sensible, at least, more of me. :)

actually i don't feel that it's already independence day. am still an avid june 12 fan. haha. yeah, right. but i really don't feel this rescheduling of holidays. i'd have to stop on that argument since it's already a law, what can i do ei?

that's two of the most beautiful lines i've ever heard. i'm currently listening to regina spektor because my friend sang asked me to get a copy of "the call", the only actual song you'll hear in prince caspian. on the nervy kissing scene with keanu reeves look-alike prince caspian.
i think i'll be downloading a lot of spektor songs. ^^

speaking of prince caspian, i went on a 2-movie marathon last saturday with my friend and co-scorpio, tetay. yeah, no need to tell that we're both scorpios but that's part of our bond. we watched prince caspian first then after 10 minutes we hopped to the cinema tickets for kung fu panda.
i think my sense of humor is at level with a child's. more than once did i hear the child at the row in front of me laugh with me at funny scenes in kfp. perhaps i'm still a kid. sa bagay, ji told me that i look like a big pre-schooler. i'd want to think of that as a compliment. haha.
i love kfp more than prince caspian. sorry. :P

IT Heroes: Heroes Happen Here
I wasn't supposed to go to IT Heroes, an MS event, due to the location: Mall of Asia (MOA). Plus the fact that our company doesn't have a booth there. Bummer.
So last Thursday (April 10), I didn't expect to find myself, sitting in the SMX Convention Center of MOA, strapped with a yellow bracelet pertaining to my non-registration to the said event. Parang sa Enchanted Kingdom no?
These curly braces are so familiar. Bakit kaya? Wehehe.
Anyway, I love the paper bag. Haha!

Happy Holy Week
Such a scenario is very common at Pampanga. That's why I wasn't able to get closer to the magdarame (Kapampangan term for those who carry crosses or beat their bloody backs for penance). I was ashamed to take pictures of magdarames because I was the only one doing it there.
Do you know how the magdarames' backs get bloodied? When they start this ritual they have a common place for getting their backs pierced by a wooden block full of blades. Then they start their procession, hurtling their backs with a rope-like apparatus.
All of these magdarames have assistants with them in their whole journey. When I was at Panipuan last Holy Wednesday, my friend's sister told us that she saw a magdarame running with his cross because it was around 3PM and the sun was scorching hot. He had no sandals on his feet and his assistants were running after him. Hehe.
I hope next time I get to go on a Good Friday and take pictures (with a real digicam) at Cutud, San Fernando, where the famous crucifixions are. Instead I was at a puni with my long-time friends that Holy Wednesday night. It has been my tradition for an overnight at my friend's house at Panipuan every Holy Week. Perhaps tradition is inherently ingrained in us Kapampangans. Queer as it sounds, Holy Week is like a feast to us.Wednesday, February 13, 2008

3. Of course, I watched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I think I liked Harry Potter 4 than this one. I was waiting for one of the main characters to die but realized at the end of the movie that he will die on the sixth installment yet. Wrong anticipation. Wehehe. XD
