Guess Who Invaded McDo

DISCLAIMER: No children were hurt by the making of this blog post. Peace to the fastfood chains involved. Pun intended but no offense, kei? ^^

***

Yesterday I accompanied a friend of mine and went dining at McDonald's. (Fondly called McDo by us Filipinos?)

Welcome to McDonald's, he says..

It seems he jives with the background.

Ooh, what's that he's gawking at?

Geez, who minds if he eats some cheeseburger? To hell with calories.

Sorry, can't help take pictures of my Jollibee* doll while we were at McDonald's. :D

Bummer, I didn't get a Filipino-inspired Jollibee costume. :(

* Jollibee is a Philippine fast food chain which highly competes with McDonald's for the appetites of Pinoy children and adults alike.

Help! Neri Has Been Eaten by an Evil Pumpkin!

Before: The Hungry Evil Pumpkin.

After: Neri is inside the Evil Pumpkin tickling him to get out.

Trick or treat! Happy Halloween, guys! ^^

Found this very useful info in Wikipedia regarding Halloween:
The term Halloween is shortened from All Hallows' Even (both "even" and "eve" are abbreviations of "evening", but "Halloween" gets its "n" from "even") as it is the eve of "All Hallows' Day", which is now also known as All Saints' Day.

The name jack-o'-lantern can be traced back to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a greedy, gambling, hard-drinking old farmer. He tricked the devil into climbing a tree and trapped him by carving a cross into the tree trunk. In revenge, the devil placed a curse on Jack, condemning him to forever wander the earth at night with the only light he had: a candle inside of a hollowed turnip. The carving of pumpkins is associated with Halloween in North America, where pumpkins were readily available and much larger, making them easier to carve than turnips.

Honestly, I think "Happy Halloween" is ironic. How can you be happy when it means that evil spirits are prowling on your backyard? ^^

Hug a Developer Today

Hug me! Hehehe. So true, funny how it seems... (And I'm singing again.)

I can't help but laugh at this because this is really what I've experienced in my fast-tracked career in Manila! (Except for the child thing, of course.) Still despite the laughs, you cry inside and confirm that "I am in pain." ;)

Love This Line

I didn't do anything. I was just standing there, looking delicious.

Nothing beats this! XD

If you know better lines than this, speak out! Why not make a one-liner contest? Haha. ^^

I Got Locked in My Own Room

Dreaded DoorknobA few minutes ago my family was shouting and banging the door... from outside this room where I'm writing this post.

My sister Let just got home and tried to open the door of my room when it won't budge. She thought I locked it and I shouted back that I didn't. She asked Mama if someone locked it and Mama didn't know either. Until I also heard Papa in the commotion outside. Meanwhile, I knew that the doorknob will soon be destroyed because it might have locked on its own. I just continued thinking of what to blog.

Their shouting didn't cease so it was my turn to shout back. No, I didn't lock it. Yes, I'm also trying to open it inside. Yes, I tried locking and unlocking it. To no avail.

Papa then appeared from the window. (We have some little space from the wall so that one person can fit and walk right through the side of the house.) He didn't believe that I tried opening the door. He had to see from himself. After making him believe my conscious effort on doorknobbing, they tried to force the door open.

Mama was triumphant with the can opener. Imagine that! A can opener opened the doorknob. Haha!

Let then told me that while she was already panicking on the locked door, Mama was about to eat pizza and wasn't listening to Let. When Let persisted, Mama was dubious if she should let go of her pizza slice. Hehe.

My room can't be locked anymore. At least I'll have pizza later to ease the pain. Haha.

Project Paint Gate (PG)

In the past two days, I and my parents have been re-painting our gate.

You don't know how rust can look so appealing till you see it face to face. Haha. Lookie here. Click on the thumbnail if you dare to see it. Hehe.

One of my childhood dreams is to be a painter. I like the feel of a paintbrush in my hand and swirling it back and forth.
I think I'm a "hand" person. My interests concern the use of hands: writing, photography, programming, painting, playing the piano, singing (you need to hold the mic for that *wink*). But then we all use our hands most, if not all, of the time. So let's scrap that "hand" person I said.

So going back to Project Paint Gate (PG), my parents and I were debating last week on what color to paint the gate with. I wanted mint green. Papa liked the "pink-orange" he saw on the baker's newly-painted house. (I haven't seen the baker's house yet so I can't imagine what "pink-orange" is. Let and I are thinking of peach.) Mama was strongly advocating the "pink-violet" of Let's flowers. (The flowers that Let got from Baguio, which magically changed its colors from blue, green, purple, and pink. What's next?)

Come Monday this week, they decided it's time to buy the cans of paint needed. With no definite color decided yet. I said I'd go but after my long afternoon nap, I can't make my feet go with them. So they went off and came back with *drums please*.... a dark horrid-looking mix of red and violet. I'm sorry to say that it was horrid but it's horrid if you'll paint it on a gate. Our gate even.

All of us were not happy with the color. Not even Mama and Papa. But the paint must be used. And the gate, painted.

To be continued. Need to eat lunch first then rest a while. ;)

Nag-Toothbrush Ka Na?

Nakausap ko uli si Pepe the night after ng nakakalokang usapang naikwento ko na. Pero this time, nakisali rin si Prick. O di ba, around the world ang drama ng barkada. Isa sa Pinas, isa sa Japan, isa sa SG.

Ginamit namin uli PC-to-PC calls ng YM kaso di namin mapagana as voice conference. E di isa-isang tawag. Ang gulo! Hahaha. Pabalik-balik na call and hold. Haha.

Wahaha XD)

Pepe: Eto, tapos na mag-download. Install ko na.
Neri: Sige.
Pepe: Asan ba si Prick? Iniwan tayo rito.
Neri: Nag-toothbrush daw. Ikaw nag-toothbrush na?

(Ako kasi nag-toothbrush na. Napakahalaga ng fresh breath, no? Hehe.)

Pepe: Di pa naman.
Neri: Ano? Di ka pa nagtu-toothbrush?! Yak.

Neri: So di ka pa depressed? (:P)

Monologue

Pepe: Uy, Ner, may chika ako.
Neri: Wag na.
Pepe: Hindi, bago 'to.
Neri: Sige. (Nag-aanticipate ng kwentong Singapore. Naki-chat muna sa iba pang kakilala.)
Pepe: Kasi nung nag-mass ako
Pepe: Ayan ah, may proof na nagsisimba pa 'ko.
Pepe: Pagtalikod ko, nabigla ako
Pepe: Hulaan mo kung sino nakita ko.
Pepe: Dali, hulaan mo, Ner.

Pepe: Dali, Ner. Sabihin mo sino.
Pepe: Para di naman 'to mukhang monologue.
Neri: (Kakabasa lang sa naiwang window.) Hahaha.
Pepe: Tristan Felix.
Neri: Sino yun? (Inaalala.)
Pepe: Ay, Ner, ano ba? Kilala mo yun no. Yung president namin IECEP.
Neri: Di ko kilala eh.
Pepe: Busit ka, Ner! Kilala mo yun!
Neri: Talagang hindi nga. Hahaha!
Hahaha!

Neri: Congrats, Pepe! Napatawa mo ako! Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

View My WebCam

Ako sa hapon hanggang pagabi then papalitan nya ko pag-uwi nya from school/work.

(Bum nga eh no?)

Jap: Ganyan talaga, mabagal.
Let: Talagang tumigil eh. Nakakatawa nga hitsura mo eh. Hahaha.

[blah blah blah]

Let: Patay kasi ilaw. Hehehe. (sinindihan uli ang ilaw)
Jap: Ah ganun ba.

As if bibili.

Neri: Chen, bagay mo yan.
Chen: Thank you. (Pa-cute na sagot.)
Neri: Bilhin mo na. (Tinitignan kung bibilhin nga ng kasama.)
Chen: (tinignan ang tag price) Ay, ang mahal. 300.

After 10 minutes...

Lisa: Mas bagay mo pa rin yan, Chen. (Tinutukoy ang pink shades na mukhang Chanel.)
Chen: Talaga? Thank you.

After 5 minutes...

After mag-picturan at 5 minutes...
Sumubok ng isa pang shades si Chen.

Neri: Chen, di mo bagay.
Lisa: Di mo bagay, Chen.
Saleslady2: Pangit. (In fairness, honest sya.)

Onga no. Ang galing. (Napaisip.)
Saleslady2: Ibig pong sabihin nyan mas malinaw sya kesa ordinary UV shades. Tsaka mas malamig sa mata.
Neri: (pinakiramdaman ang mata) Sa bagay. (Tinignan ang presyo.) Ay, 400 pala. Wala bang ganitong style na hindi polarized?
Saleslady2: Ay wala na po, ma'am. Madali po kasing maubos ang ganyang style.
Neri: Ay ganun. (Nanghihinayang. Iniisip kung kakayanin ng budget.)

Pero mabalik tayo ke Chen. After 5 minutes...

Chen: Sige, bilhin ko na. (Tinutukoy ang pink shades na mukhang Chanel.)
Neri: Ay salamat. Bagay mo naman kasi talaga.
Saleslady2: Sige po, ma'am, kuha lang ako ng stock.
Chen: Ok.

After 2 minutes, bumalik si Saleslady2.

Saleslady2: Ay, ma'am, wala na po palang stock.
Chen: Ganun?

(Hehehe.)
Lisa: (tumatawa pa rin)
Saleslady1: (nakangiti)

Rally for Peace

Another rally. Another group against the government. It seems that all we do is rant (and gossip) nowadays.

Have we done something beneficial to the country aside from complaining?

Wednesday lunch had us talking about corruption. Someone noted that corruption is already ingrained in our culture. So how do we go about it when the mind is the culprit?

Our philosopher "Pope" gave two solutions:
1. On social terms: Communism. Think China.
2. On moral terms: Annihilate the entire Filipino race save for 10 un-corrupt individuals. Think Noah's ark.

I love democracy but I'm having second thoughts if the Filipinos are disciplined enough to take it. Any more radical suggestions to eradicate corruption?

Kung Hei Ta Ba Choi!

Chinese Cat?

I know, I know... Chinese New Year's long over. We didn't even have the chance to eat tikoy at home. :'(

Hell, I'd rather greet you a Happy New Year than Happy Valentines. Bitterness? :P
I'm skipping tomorrow though. Hehe.

The Software Developer's Prayer

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace
where there is code that I should have completed
where there are defects that I should have fixed
where there are deadlines that I should have met.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much as seek as
to be understood as to understand irate clients
to be supported as to support difficult applications
to be valued as to value quality software design.

For it is in debugging that we find errors,
it is in requirements that we find clarity,
and it is in camaraderie that we find harmony in work.

Amen.

Never try and teach a pig to sing

Never try and teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig. - Source unknown

I got this way back in high school, reading over a mini-magazine with witticisms. My friend Tetay and I laughed our heads off while "reflecting" on the adage. Our classmates got curious why we were laughing and just pointed at the quote. We only received a handful of glares. Perhaps Tetay and I only know how to teach a pig to sing. :P

But kidding aside, I think there's a ring of truth in this witty remark. Don't you think so?

Create Old User

I have long noticed this phrase in most web/windows applications: Create New User (or for others: Add New User).

Why "new"?
Can you create an old user?
Isn't it that whatever you create is considered new?

I googled this phrase and even Windows XP turns up with this phrase.

Am I just being daft? :P

Is it better to watch the news than watch anime?

There is always a time in our office that we won't be doing anything particular (or perhaps just waiting for the client to call our attention to a critical bug). And this day might be categorized as such, save for the business emails I had to read and send.

So this particular afternoon as Tan was prowling the office grounds, which isn't so large to prowl on, he was standing behind me and saw what I was doing --- reading my mail. I noticed him hovering and asked why. He motioned that Art was using his PC and sat down on the vacant seat beside me. Out of nowhere, he popped the question: Why is it that watching anime is perceived as negative compared to watching the news?

I was baffled. Tan doesn't resort to this kind of conversation. I cajoled him that he might have ill feelings with the news since he likes anime. But he persisted. He seemed serious.

So we delved into the issue. Yes, I agreed that if I were looking at what others are doing at work and found one watching anime, it would impose a negative impression. But if I saw one watching the news instead, it would seem okay. Nevertheless, Tan said, isn't it they're doing the same thing actually because they both are whiling away time? And again, I said yes. A difficult matter indeed.

With the little entrails of brain I still have, I further sought for an answer. This is what I got: News is not entertainment. Therefore reading the news isn't as bad as watching anime since one does not seek entertainment in the former, but information. Ah, I was quite satisfied with what my li'l brain coughed up yet Tan wasn't. He cannot accept it because what if one isn't really into news? What else will you do?

More discussion ensued (for a few minutes) and we caught Nhut's and Chen's attention. The two girls were also amazed at Tan's question and tried to bring home the same point I had. Watching anime is meant for enjoyment while the news is not. (Except if you're morbid and likes the increase in our crime and mortality rate.)

However, in the end, we agreed that indeed both acts should have the same impact --- not working while office hours --- and should therefore be seen similarly. Still we understand that that is not what is generally conceived. Here we insert the famous line: Life is unfair.

I even thought of an analogy of two students, one reading the newspaper and the other reading a comic book. Most people will perceive that the one reading the news is likely to be more intellectual than the one reading the comic book. Yet that should not be the case.

So what do we do with this discovery?

We conclude that if the boss is around, watch the news instead. Otherwise, switch to anime.

Chenalyn Mercado

As of this writing, I'm deleting most of Chen's blog. (I can't find the delete account, that's why I said most.)

The blog was mostly about Chen's (mis)adventures especially in conversations. It started out as a list of comical statements (example: magpa-henna sa kilikili) in my OneNote. Then one day I thought: why not blog it?

However last July, the fun blog I was writing in came to a conclusion due to evil perpetrators.

July 13th, 2007

Seriousness
Bow. XD

Chen's Manager

Therefore, I am formally closing that blog (once I find that delete button). I wanna thank all those who laughed with us through the posts.

Bakeshop vs. Foodshop

Gets? Forget the first name.

It read: (under the brand name) Bakeshop. Foodshop.

Nhut: Food.
Ako: Ang galing mo talaga, Nhut!
Nhut: Syempre naman.

Logic nga naman ng mga adik. *kamot sa ulong may kuto*

Yakult Litro.

Marami tayo! XD

Yakult Tips and Tricks.

1. Aluging mabuti (shake well) ang Yakult.
2. Aluging muli. Pakaalog nang mabuti.
3. Tanggalin ang wrapper.
