Super 8: An Alien Passing By Town

Super 8 poster

I have been deceived by hearsayings that the title pertains to a giant 8-legged alien and so I thought I would be watching a sci-fi movie. Yes, of course, there was the giant alien - I wasn't able to count its legs though - who robbed electric/electronic stuff and kidnapped people. (Still I don't understand where the lost dogs come in the alien's path. Enlighten me please.)

But I believe the film isn't about the alien at all. He may have just crossed over from another movie, which might be District 9.

Angels and Demons, Still Better Than Da Vinci Code

I've read both books of Dan Brown and I liked the first Robert Langdon novel than the more controversial one because of the twisted twists. So maybe it's not a surprise that I liked its movie version as well compared to The Da Vinci Code movie.

Though the non-Brown fan would assume that Angels and Demons is the sequel of The Da Vinci Code especially with the movie pointing to a previous adventure of the professor, it's actually the opposite. Angels and Demons is the prequel though there's no problem with the events overlapping or interchanging since the two plots weren't connected with each other.

As for the movie elements, I nitpick on editing and I hate it when I see ugly cuts in the film. It makes the film cheap at times and I thought they could've made this low-budgeted since they know many will still see the movie just because of the title. True.

Book-wise, of course we know that the movie would alter scenes. Since it's been years since I read the novel, I don't recall exact parts of the plot that weren't played except for the the "Air" cardinal. He was located not at the stairs but at a bench. And of course, who wouldn't miss the greatest twist in the story? The carmelengo is the biological son of the late pope. Still I understand the gravity of that concept so we'll forgive them for that. I assume that we're blessed that the movie wasn't totally banned from filming.

Despite that great bit of twist that was left behind and the disappointment of not seeing Anne Hathaway as Vittoria (from past rumors), I can still say that Angels and Demons is a great film and we can give most of the credit to the novel of course. But I thank the screenwriters in putting a better film in Angels and Demons than the disappointing Da Vinci Code (maybe because of the greater scandal there).

If you haven't read the book, you may find this movie a little bit boring at first especially on tiring details combined with a little drag of comedy from Tom Hanks. (Still I think Hanks is perfect as Langdon.) But the story, particularly the climax that tries to lengthen and form as it goes, will surprise you as what I experienced when I finished reading the book years ago.

As one of my favorite books, Angels and Demons' message wasn't lost in the movie despite the obvious bending to religion instead of academe. The movie was worth the watch despite knowing the ending... the graphic visuals of torture are enough. (Though I think they were minimized for the audience. Or maybe I just had a darker imagination. Hehe.)

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (trailer)

I just love Ice Age, especially its first stint! Where will the acorn go to now? ^^

My fave character is Scrat despite (and maybe because of) not having a main role in the film. Hmmm... and now he has a partner! Teehee. ^^

Who's your favorite Ice Age animal? :)

Road to the Oscars (video)

Who are you vying for the Oscars?

Me of course want Heath Ledger for best supporting actor since day one of Dark Knight. But for best picture, I want Slumdog Millionaire to win. ^^

I Want More Push (the movie)

Push (the movie starring Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning) had a great concept going with its psychic powers like telekinesis, clairvoyance, etc. but I just feel that the film didn't give justice to that great concept. The plot was good enough but it really would've been better especially with the unraveling of the characters' personal stories, not to mention the lack of intense telekinetic action.

I think the actors did good particularly Dakota Fanning; it's just that the material wasn't ripe enough. I want more. :(

Anyway, it seems that this kind of genre started with Heroes and Jumper. What next? :)

Before I wanted to have the power to read minds, but then I realized things are better the normal way.

What superpower do you want to have?

Say Yes to Life

You say no to life and therefore you're not living.
- Yes Man

Jim Carrey is the Yes Man

I was a great fan of Jim Carrey in my teenage years. As in. He has a special part in my book of life when I was in high school. Together with Dennis of Ghost Fighter. I know, I'm weird. :D

Yes Man was shown in the US last December but I'm not sure if it's been already shown here in the Philippines. Or if it'll ever be shown. I hope so, I think it'll be another good film of Carrey's since Bruce Almighty.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (trailer)

Before New Moon (Twilight's sequel) enters into the picture, Underworld's prequel will give us a bloody battle between vampires and werewolves.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans will be showing on Jan 22. Since this is a prequel, we won't see pretty Kate Beckinsale. Sad, huh? I've always like the Underworld series but without the agile Selene (Beckinsale's character), I'm not too excited to see this in the big screen.

COOL Telekinetic Action Scene from Push (video)

There are no words to describe what you are about to see. (Well, except telekinesis and clairvoyance. Hehe.)

So just watch. :D

Cool, huh? Way too cool! This is like a new Matrix in the making (with Matrix' groundbreaking bullet-ducking) if most of the movie scenes are like this.

Push, starring Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning, will open in Feb 6. (Dunno if also here in the Phils. Well, hopefully. *cross fingers*)

This will definitely be included in my to-watch list, which I have to write down because the list is getting longer than expected. :D

I had a childhood penchant for telekinesis.
Are you telekinetic, clairvoyant perhaps? :D

Dogs Won't Leave Hollywood

Man's best friend won't leave him be even to the movies. We've seen Dalmatians 101, Beethoven, Underdog, and classic Lassie among all dog films out there. Perhaps inspired from the glamorized chihuahua with the likes of Paris Hilton's pet, Disney gives us Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

Drew Barrymore voices over Chloe, Andy Garcia on Delgado

I can't find the trailer that's being shown in movie houses recently. The trailer above is like an MTV of a chihuahua singing the Chihuahua song. :D

Meanwhile, Dreamworks has also done their bit on our canine friends with Hotel for Dogs.

Hotel for Dogs Trailer

That shoe vending machine is sweet. Also, Lisa Kudrow is very brilliant with a dumb blonde character. ^^

Question: Are you a dog or cat person? :)

Domestic Trailer for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-li

Lovely Kristine Kreuk playing the role of Chun Li

It's like the style of X-Men Origins getting into the beginning of the character but, of course, the martial arts similar with Dragon Ball perhaps?

I've never actually played Street Fighter that long except in PC simulators so I'm not exactly a fan. But Chun Li was one of the famous characters in the Capcom game. Why? Does anyone know? If you do, please bring light to this matter. Thanks! :)

Love Me Again: Angel and Piolo's First Movie Team-up

Love Me Again (Land Down Under) trailer, starring Angel Locsin and Piolo Pascual

Shot in Bukidnon and Australia (the land down under), Star Cinema presents Angel Locsin and Piolo Pascual's first movie together after the success of their TV series Lobo.

Angel and Piolo takes their heels into cowboy boots as they delve into the story of two former lovers who had to be separated and then brought back together by fate. Will they be able to bring back the old flame once more?

The movie will be shown here in the Philippines by January 15.

I've seen this trailer when we watched Ang Tanging Ina N'yong Lahat and I think it's a good film, the usual romance-drama that is... well Star Cinema always have good films as far as I can tell, especially in the drama arena.

Local films going to the province or abroad has been the trend nowadays like Baler, Dubai, Batanes, Milan, etc. Good thing they didn't exactly put in Australia in the title, though they're hinting at it with "Land Down Under" which I don't think is relevant. Well at least we also see here the beauty of Bukidnon. :)

Piolo sung the theme song and I have to admit his voice has gone a long way since he attempted his music career. (I loved the theme song of One More Chance and was surprised to know Piolo was the recorded voice in it.) Meanwhile, Angel sure has more drama in her now; so does this mean she got the training she intended when she went to ABS-CBN and left GMA?

I'm just a little bothered with the love scene. Why do they need to focus on Piolo's abs?! He's handsome, right, but I don't think the abs have something to do with the love scene or the movie for that matter. Nitpicking. Haha.

Are you a fan of Angel or Piolo?

Lea Salonga Sings for Dayo, 1st Filipino All-Digital Animated Film

Dayo (Wanderer) is the first Filipino animated film that uses paperless 2D and 3D technologies. If you're a Filipino, this is really totally cool since this is not expected of us as creators but only as employed animators to the big guys like Pixar or Marvel. You can still watch it in cinemas since it's included in the ongoing Metro Manila Film Festival. (You can also get a raffle stub for watching all MMFF entries.)

Here's the MTV of Dayo with none other than Lea Salonga and the FILharmoniKA conducted by Gerard Salonga.

THE OBAMA FACTOR ON DAYO
“[...] Dayo is different, something special,” said Lea. “I didn’t have to voice any character, I just sing the theme song. The song is something incredibly inspirational, two minutes and 49 seconds long. It tells people to fly high, aim high and reach for their dreams.”

The main character, Buboy, is a dayo (stranger) in the Land of Elementalia where he tries to save his grandparents against all odds, a feat which Lea likened to Barack Obama’s landmark victory in the recent US presidential election.

“I guess that, like Obama, the song could be seen as an inspiration for our countrymen — you know, to aim high and to always look up. Don’t look down and do everything to make your dream come true.”

WHO IS LEA SALONGA AGAIN?
Everyone knows who Lea Salonga is. If not, they have probably spent the last decade or so in a deep, dark hole in the middle of nowhere. But just for the record – Lea Salonga is the first Filipina to ever star in a West End and Broadway production [Miss Saigon of course] and the first Filipina to ever win international theater accolades including the most prestigious award in British theatre, the Laurence Olivier Award, the Antoinette Perry or the Tony Awards for Excellence in Theatre, the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Awards and the Theatre World Award.

Lea was also the first Asian to play Eponine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway. All these firsts make Lea a veritable First Lady in the world of theater – and I do mean world! Now this theater Titan, adds another first to her list. She is singing the theme song, “Lipad,” of the upcoming Filipino animated feature “Dayo sa Mundo ng Elementalia.” Though Lea has been the singing voice in animated films before - Princess Jasmine and Mulan in Disney’s Aladdin and Mulan respectively – this is the first time she is singing for a Filipino animated production.

Wolverine: Love and Hate Affair

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE HD

I just love Wolverine's character even when I was a child watching the cartoon series at Channel 2. (Oha I still remember that. That's the only X-men cartoon series that I like.)

But Hugh Jackman made me love Wolverine even more. Being the sexy rebel wolf that he is, Wolverine made a big break for Jackman, ei?

I'll be watching this movie for that Gambit confrontation. And was that Sabre Tooth? Lavhet! ^^

Quarantine: Game

Because of the hubbub in Hotel626 (which I still can't play due to scary reasons hehe), I got curious with Quarantine's flash game also. However I think it's not really that scary compared to Hotel626. It's like playing Resident Evil or House of the Dead.

Try out the Quarantine Game here.

I tried playing the game but I don't get it why I keep running out of bullets. I'll try again later.

Terminator Salvation Trailer

And I thought Terminator ended with its third installment, Rise of the Machines. I don't see any Arnold in the trailer. I'll miss the big guy. Hehe.

But among all the Terminator movies, I still love the second one, Judgment Day, because of its heart-warming presentation. (It's a robot film I know.) Though I haven't really watched the first in the series.

Are you a Terminator fan? Or John Connor's? Or even Schwarzenegger's? :D

A Hotter (Queer) Robert Pattinson in Little Ashes

Is this like Brokeback Mountain? I mean the "queerness" factor. This means a queer yet hotter Robert Pattinson then. Yum, anyone? :D

Seven Pounds Trailer

Opens in the US this December 19th while here in the Philippines on February next year. Hayz.

Anyway, I love Will Smith movies so I'm putting this in my to-watch list. Plus this film is from the makers of "The Pursuit of Happyness" as well. Hopefully, a great story again. :)
